Working with a dietitian can dramatically improve your health and your overall sense of well-being. A good dietitian will do more than just tell you to eat you veggies – they will help you develop a nutrition plan complete with any supplements you may need and a meal plan that suits both your tastes and your lifestyle.
But how do you find a dietitian in Ontario? More importantly, how do you find the best dietitian in Ontario and how do you know?
Here are a few questions you should ask to determine if a dietitian is the best dietitian in Ontario for you:
1. What are your credentials?
To become a Registered Dietitian, you must go through rigorous schooling. Not everyone who calls themselves a nutritionist, nutrition coach, etc. actually has that schooling. To find a Registered Dietitian, you should look for someone who has the initials R.D. after their name. If you have any doubts about someone’s credentials, you can always look them up on the Registered Dietitians of Canada website.
2. What are your areas of specialty?
Even though dietitians have highly specialized training already, many of them specialize further. Some might specialize in helping people who have diabetes. Others might specialize in working with athletes. Still others, have special knowledge in working with expecting and new mothers.
If you feel that your dietary needs are unique because you fit into one of the above (or another) categories, then it only makes sense to work with someone with more experience in that area.
3. Do you include meal planning in your services?
Many dietitians offer meal planning with their services. This is important because it means that you will not only learn what foods to include in your diet, but how you can prepare them in exciting and tasty ways.
You also want to make sure that any meal planning ideas given to you by your dietitian are realistic for you and your family and something that will be sustainable long term.
