Working with a registered dietitian can be a great way to become healthier, lose weight, and just feel better about yourself. A Registered Dietitian will provide you with expert advice on nutrition as well as meal planning and preparation tips to suit the tastes and lifestyle of your family.
Maybe you have been thinking about improving your eating habits for awhile now and you’re wondering how you can find the best dietitian in your area. Well – here are a few tips.
Make sure they have the proper credentials.
Anyone can call themselves a generic title like “nutrition coach” without necessarily having any training in that area. Registered Dietitians are professionals who have gone through considerable schooling and training before taking on the responsibility of advising others on a healthy diet. When choosing a dietitian in your area, make sure that they at least have the designation of R.D. or R.D.N after their name (some may also have additional designations depending on their areas of specialty).
Find the right fit.
Someone may be a great dietitian but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they are a great dietitian for you. You need to find someone that you feel comfortable with and who also has the right areas of specialization. For example, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, you will have different nutritional requirements than someone who is over 65.
Talk to any dietitian you are considering working with and ask them about their specialties as well as any other questions you may have.
Get referrals and recommendations.
There are many ways to do this. If you have friends or family members who work with a dietitian, ask them who they recommend and why. If you don’t know anyone who works with a dietitian, you can check out their recommendations from clients on their websites or on social media.
If the dietitian is active on social media, follow them and see if they are promoting good nutrition and a healthy lifestyle.
